Environmental Attribute Guide

As a longstanding green flooring industry advocate aware of some of the environmental issues in the industry, ETX Surfaces has defined the language used to describe what makes our wood flooring products truly green. Below is an in-depth explanation of the symbols and language we use on our products.

Third Party Certifiers

Lacey Act Compliant
In 2008, Congress passed a law banning commerce in illegally sourced plants and their products, including wood products. It is unlawful to import, export, sell, acquire, or purchase fish, wildlife or plants and plant products, including products made from illegally logged woods, that are taken, possessed, transported, or sold: 1) in violation of U.S. or Indian law, or 2) in interstate or foreign commerce involving any fish, wildlife, or plants taken possessed or sold in violation of State or foreign law.
PEFC®

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards.

The U.S. Green Building Council® (USGBC) is the driving force of a green building industry, bringing together a diverse constituency of builders and environmentalists, corporations and nonprofit organizations, elected officials, concerned citizens, teachers, and students. USGBC is the developer and administrator of the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building certification program and the convener of the Greenbuild® International Conference & Expo.

LEED® certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home, or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health, including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. MRc4

The product uses materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (based on cost) of the total value of materials in the project. The sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content must constitute at least 20% of total materials costs.

MRc6

The product uses rapidly renewable building materials and products (made from plants that are typically harvested within a 10-year cycle or shorter) for 2.5% of the total value of all building materials and products used in the project, based on cost.

MRc7

The product uses a minimum of 50% of wood-based materials and products, which are certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) Principles and Criteria, for wood building components. These components include, but are not limited to, structural framing and general dimensional framing, flooring, subflooring, wood doors, and finishes.

EQc4.4

The composite wood and agrifiber products such as engineered wood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), plywood, wheatboard, strawboard, panel substrates and door cores contain no added urea-formaldehyde resins.

 

ETX Surfaces’ Product Attributes

Non-Wood

The product is not composed of wood and is not from trees. Examples of alternative to fiber to wood options include bamboo, palm, and cork.

Rapidly Renewable

The timber used to make the products takes an average of 15 years or less to regrow. Qualifies as USGB LEED MR6.

Plantation Grown

Timber that comes from plantations that are not established at the expense of natural forest and do not use genetically-modified organisms (GMOs).

Salvaged Post Agricultural

Repurposes logs that were salvaged from old orchards that were being replanted, re-milling them into new products.

Recycled Post Industrial

Recycled “waste wood”, such as sawdust, veneer backing boards or peeler cores that is repurposed and re-milled into new products. Qualifies as FSC Recycled & USGB LEED MR4.

Reclaimed Building Deconstruction

Remanufactured timbers that come from the deconstruction of old buildings, specifically doors, windows or flooring that is then re-milled into new products. Qualifies as FSC® Recycled & USGB LEED MR4.

No Added Urea-Formaldehyde

Engineered wood flooring products that contain no – less than 0.001ppm (parts per million) – added urea-formaldehyde in the glues. Tesoro Woods uses a newly developed two-part, EPI glue system that contains no added urea-formaldehyde.

Low VOC

The 3rd Party Certified Low-VOC product emit less than 0.005ppm (parts per million) volatile organic compound chemicals.

No VOC

The 3rd Party Certified No-VOC product emit less than 0.001ppm (parts per million) volatile organic compound chemicals.

Natural Finish

Durable engineered finish composed of plant oils and waxes, with just enough highly refined mineral spirits for easy application. This finish will never crack, blister, or flake off.
